Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has credited Barisan Nasional (BN) for its significant role in ensuring political stability at both state and federal levels. As a leading member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), which is part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition, Chow emphasized that the partnership between PH and BN has been instrumental in driving governance and development initiatives.
Speaking at the Penang MIC’s Deepavali open house, Chow expressed his gratitude to BN for its support during the 2023 state election. He highlighted the contributions of BN component parties, including MIC, which played a key role in helping his administration implement various programs.
“Without political stability, it’s impossible to achieve meaningful progress,” Chow remarked. “Our collaboration has enabled us to focus on improving lives and advancing the state’s development.”
Chow also praised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership, noting that it has bolstered both public trust and international confidence in the government. He acknowledged Musa Sheikh Fadzir, Penang’s BN and Umno chief, for his leadership in strengthening ties between the two coalitions.
“The 2023 state election results speak volumes about the success of this partnership,” Chow said. “Unity and teamwork have proven to be the foundation of our achievements.”
The PH-BN alliance secured 29 seats in the 40-member Penang state assembly, leaving Perikatan Nasional (PN) with 11. DAP secured all 19 seats it contested, while PKR and Amanah won seven and one, respectively. BN managed to win two of its six contested seats, with Sungai Acheh assemblyman Rashidi Zinol now serving in Chow’s state executive council.
Chow underlined the importance of continuing this collaboration as Malaysia gears up for the next general election in three years.
The Deepavali celebration marked another memorable moment for Chow, as it was the first Penang MIC event of its kind in 15 years. Chow, who had celebrated his 65th birthday just a day prior, was surprised with a vibrant flower garland from state MIC chief J Dhinagaran and party members.
Adding to the spirit of unity, former Penang Chief Minister and DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng was also present at the event, reinforcing the camaraderie among coalition members.
