UNIQLO is taking significant steps toward creating a more inclusive workplace in Malaysia by partnering with Early Autism Project (EAP) Malaysia. This collaboration aims to equip employees with the necessary skills to engage with individuals with disabilities, fostering an environment of support and inclusion for both staff and customers.
EAP Malaysia, an autism-focused center, uses the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) method to provide customized treatment programs for individuals on the autism spectrum. Since last December, EAP has been training UNIQLO employees to improve their interactions with customers and colleagues with disabilities.
Evelyn Tan, UNIQLO Malaysia's Director of Legal and Sustainability, spoke about the benefits of this partnership and how it supports the disabled community.
Training Managers for Inclusivity
Tan explained that the partnership’s primary focus is to offer store managers specialized training, ensuring they have the knowledge and skills to engage with people with disabilities confidently.
“Our goal is to equip our employees with the right tools to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone, whether they are staff or customers,” Tan said. She added that UNIQLO aims to set a standard for accessibility within the retail industry.
Currently, UNIQLO Malaysia employs 27 individuals with disabilities at 27 locations across the country, and they are committed to expanding this number as they continue to grow.
Empowering Employees through Training
The training provided by EAP helps employees gain the skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with individuals with disabilities. It focuses on raising awareness and offering practical techniques for creating an inclusive and supportive workplace.
Tan emphasized, “The training enables our employees to gain the confidence to adapt to different situations and provide personalized service to meet the unique needs of each customer.”
Jochebed Isaacs, Director of EAP Malaysia, explained that the training includes guidance on communication methods, accessibility considerations, and fostering a supportive workplace environment.
Improving Accessibility in Stores
In addition to the training, UNIQLO has worked to enhance accessibility at its physical locations. The Damansara Avenue Square store serves as an example, featuring universal fitting rooms, wheelchair-accessible facilities, and designated parking spaces for individuals with disabilities.
However, Tan highlighted that inclusivity goes beyond physical designs. “It’s about fostering an atmosphere where everyone feels respected and valued, both as customers and as employees,” she stated.
Inclusive Hiring Practices
UNIQLO Malaysia is committed to providing equal opportunities to individuals with disabilities. Rather than imposing strict limitations based on disability severity, the company focuses on hiring individuals who can perform tasks with reasonable accommodations.
Tan shared that employees with disabilities receive equal benefits, pay, and career advancement opportunities. The company also offers job coaching and other tailored support to help employees succeed in their roles.
Expanding Initiatives for Disabled Employment
To further support individuals with autism in the workforce, UNIQLO has partnered with Enabling Academy (EA), a program by Gamuda Berhad that helps adults with autism transition into employment.
Through this collaboration, UNIQLO offers a Retail Training Course that blends classroom lessons with practical, in-store experience. Employees with disabilities lead the course, sharing insights and hands-on knowledge with trainees.
Several trainees from the EA program have already been successfully hired by UNIQLO, and Tan confirmed that the company remains dedicated to continuing this initiative. UNIQLO is also open to partnering with other organizations to expand opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
